Greetings from the Dutch Consulate, Mumbai!

The Consulate is co-hosting an exclusive roundtable in collaboration with the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA). Are you a stakeholder in the textile and/or fashion industry and would you like to know how you can contribute to the SDGs? We would greatly value your participation to the discussion!

Following consultations in New York, Jakarta, London, Kuala Lumpur, and Cape Town, we are now bringing it to Mumbai. Together with the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA), we are co-hosting an exclusive roundtable consultation on the role of the textile and fashion industry in the creation of corporate benchmarks for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Why the textile industry and the SDGs?

The textile and fashion industry is an engine for development. It is one of the largest consumer industries worldwide, accounting for 2% of the world’s GDP and employing almost 60 million people around the globe. The supply chain is really complex, with thousands of actors involved in different stages throughout the chain.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out a global agenda for development that is based on social inclusion, economic prosperity and environmental sustainability. The textile industry can particularly make important contributions to achieving SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), SDG 6 (clean water), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), and SDG 5 (gender equality).

An ever growing sector

Demand for clothing continues to rise rapidly, because of a growing middle-class population and ever faster fashion cycles. Estimates show that by 2050, clothing sales could be three times as high as today. However, the industry’s linear ‘take, make, dispose’ model puts significant pressure on resources, ecosystems and society. Addressing the sector’s environmental and social footprint is key to sustaining the industry’s growth and to transition to a more sustainable fashion system.

Join us!

Hereby we invite you to join us for an expert meeting on the role of the textile and fashion industry in achieving the SDGs on March 15th 2018. What is the potential for creating benchmarks in this sector?
