Exploring an inclusive and circular business model for the sustainable development of Kajjansi area, Uganda

In Kajjansi parish the market is the economic centre. However, the market doesn’t operate as optimally and successfully as it could be. What are the challenges and what can be a sustainable business model?

Economic centre
Kajjansi Parish is one of the areas in Wakiso District with a market as its economic centre. It was constructed under the Uganda Local Government Association for sustainable development of the area and is independent of donor funding. It’s surrounded by various reputable companies such as Uganda Clays Limited, Nakigalala Tea Estate, Pan Industry, Mildmay Hospital, National Fisheries Resources Research Institute( NaFIRRI), St. Marys College Kitende, etc.

The market doesn’t currently operate as optimally and successfully it should be. Poor waste management and drainage systems, high electricity prices that vendors can barely afford and dependence on external supply of goods from other markets are some of the problems that the market and its vendors face. Value addition of the market to the Kajjansi area is greatly reduced by these problems making it less attractive to vendors, suppliers and potential customers.

Identifying solutions
This case study is crucial in identifying solutions that will enable the surrounding businesses to  benefit from the market as an economic centre and enable the market in turn to benefit from the businesses (within and) outside it. A circular business model that aims to create sustainable urban solutions for the Kajjansi area as a whole is highly recommended.

Engaging stakeholders
Currently the project is at the Stakeholder consultations/feasibility level where stakeholders are being engaged in the acquisition of information on potential collaborations. The relevant stakeholders in this case are the businesses that surround the market as mentioned in the stakeholder section.

Extra emphasis should be put in ensuring that the business model offers long term sustainable urban solutions rather than short term solutions, according to the needs of the market and business stakeholders.

What we need
Expertise needed in this case study  are technical support into sustainable waste recycling methods, drainage methods and energy saving solutions specific to the different  needs of each business stakeholder.

Furthermore we request experts /organisations of TwentyOne network to share information on this case study in terms of effective methodologies to conduct such a case study towards achieving our goals.
